Formed by Earth & Sea

Some love stories are marked by dates and milestones. Miguel and Lia's is marked by landscapes, textures, and the small treasures collected along the way.

During a dream trip to the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, the couple explored an old coal mine carved deep into the frozen terrain. In that stark, otherworldly place, they collected a small piece of coal. What began as a simple souvenir soon became the foundation for something far more meaningful, a lasting memento of their shared adventures, and ultimately, an engagement ring.

When they discovered Eco Wood Rings, they were drawn to designs featuring snow-capped mountains rising from a fine blue line. The silhouettes echoed the jagged outlines of the Svalbard islands and immediately felt familiar. The coal gathered from the mine became the dark mountain peaks, grounding the design in a specific place and moment. From there, the ring evolved naturally, shaped by memories rather than sketches.

On a later trip to the Pembrokeshire coast, they travelled with their dog, exploring beaches and collecting shells and pieces of sea glass along the way. They were also there to see puffins, a bird they had first encountered in Svalbard, subtly tying the coastal landscape back to the Arctic once again. These materials were woven into the design, forming the snowcaps and the sea, with a touch of turquoise added to enhance the blues and green hues of the glass.

Their choice of woods felt equally instinctive. An outer band of bog oak paired with an inner ring of olive wood offered a striking contrast, but also a deeper symbolism. With roots in Ireland and Spain, the materials became a quiet reflection of their heritage and the life they were building together.

As the design came together, the ring became more than a symbol of their travels. It became a reflection of their shared values and future. Every material carried meaning, and every detail offered a subtle nod to the places, moments, and connections that had shaped their relationship.

“We got married in Norway in October, and the ring really set the tone for a natural, outdoor wedding.”

Surrounded by dramatic landscapes, crisp air, and raw beauty, it felt only right that the ring echoed that same sense of nature, intention, and connection. From Arctic coal and coastal sea glass, to woods representing their roots in Ireland and Spain, the finished ring felt grounding and deeply personal. It wasn’t simply a piece to mark a moment, it told their story from the inside out.
